[astro-jc] Post-docs at Berkeley: supernova (SN) and gamma-ray burst (GRB) studies Pascal J. Bordé

                    POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

                 University of California at Berkeley

                       Department of Astronomy

Pending grant approval, we expect to make one or two postdoctoral
research appointments in the field of supernova (SN) and gamma-ray burst
(GRB) studies, directed by Professors Alex Filippenko and Joshua Bloom. The
successful candidate(s) will have an interest in pursuing at least a few of
the following directions: (1) obtain long-term optical and near-IR light
curves of SNe from diverse data sets; (2) analyze ground-based spectra of
SNe and GRB afterglows; (3) analyze Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data on SNe
and GRB afterglows and their host galaxies; (4) conduct a study of
high-redshift SNe as cosmological distance indicators, constraining the
nature of dark energy; (5) conduct a search for SNe using the 0.76-m Katzman
Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) at Lick Observatory;
(6) conduct correlated studies for GRB optical and IR afterglows with
(respectively) KAIT and the 1.3-m PAIRITEL system at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona;
(7) develop software tools for transient astronomy connected with the
Virtual Observatory; and (8) help develop a next-generation SN and GRB
follow-up telescope system. In addition, the successful candidate will
participate in writing proposals and papers, developing data-analysis
software, and assisting graduate and undergraduate students in the research
group.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics, and
experience with astronomical observations and data reduction on Sun Unix
workstations. Knowledge of current problems related to SNe and/or GRBs, and
a demonstrated competence in their solution, are highly desired additional
qualifications. Work will commence on 1 June 2005, or as soon thereafter as
possible. The appointment may start at an earlier date, if mutually
convenient. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal expected
if progress is satisfactory and funds continue to be available. The
starting salary will be in the range $40,512 - $46,056, commensurate with
experience.

Please mail a resume, list of publications, and copies of two recent
publications (preprints or reprints) to Prof. Alex Filippenko, Department of
Astronomy, 601 Campbell Hall, University of California, Berkeley, CA
94720-3411. Hard copies are much preferred over email. Applicants should
also request reference letters (email acceptable: alex@astro.berkeley.edu)
from three people familiar with their work. To ensure full consideration,
all materials should arrive by 1 February 2005, although applications will
continue to be considered during the next several months if an open position
remains. Please refer the reviewers to the UC Berkeley Statement of
Confidentiality found at http://apo.chance.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html.
Immigration status of non-citizens should be stated in the resume. The
University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action
Employer.
