Attention: John Huchra, Prof.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position to work
on the mapping of the nearby universe with the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey
(2MASS) galaxy catalog. More information on the survey can be found at:
http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~huchra/2mass/

The work would involve systematic observation and analysis of galaxies
in the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog. The goal of the project is to make
the
best available map of the "local" Universe, both the galaxy density field
from a simple redshift survey and the mass density field from peculiar
velocity studies based on the extremely uniform 2MASS catalog. Redshifts in
the southern hemisphere are being obtained as part of the AATO 6dF survey,
redshifts in the north from a combination of telescopes including Arecibo
and the FLWO 1.5-m. The survey has and will be used to determine the
clustering properties of galaxies and galaxy luminosity functions, and will
be used to determine Omega_matter and the galaxy bias function
as a function of morphological type and density.

Familiarity with optical and/or radio spectroscopy of galaxies is necessary
for the job, which will entail observing at both optical and radio
telescopes. Good computing skills are essential as is familiarity
with database manipulation. A Ph.D. or equivalent in astronomy, physics,
or a closely related discipline is required.

The position would be at a level of a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard
University at the Center for Astrophysics. The appointment would be made
initially for a period of 1 year, with a possibility of renewal for up
to 3 years. The position is open immediately, and will remain open until
filled. To apply, please submit - by email only - a curriculum vitae, a
list of publications, a brief description of research interests, and the
names and contact information for three references to: John P. Huchra,
huchra@cfa.harvard.edu.

Harvard is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women,
minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply.
