University of Durham
Dept. of Physics

Postdoctoral Position in VHE Gamma Ray Astronomy

2 year post - October 2003-October 2005; an earlier start is possible if
desired.

Starting salary up to £19,681, depending on age.

Job Description:

The Durham group is a full member of the H.E.S.S. collaboration,
currently engaged in the construction of an array of 4 very high energy
(VHE) gamma ray telescopes in Namibia. The group presently consists of
two full-time members of academic staff, two part-time members of
academic staff, one post-doctoral research assistant (PDRA), one
Enterprise Fellow and four postgraduate students.

We have recently been successful in gaining a grant for a 32-processor
farm with backup system etc., and this post is designed to exploit the
new system. The role of the PDRA will be 2-fold: (i) to manage data and
(ii) to combine shower/telescope simulations with atmospheric models to
produce atmospheric calibration algorithms that can be used routinely
with H.E.S.S. data. Management of the processor farm itself is provided
by computer support staff in the Physics Department.

Applicants should have, or expect to have in the near future, a PhD in
astrophysics or atmospheric physics, and should be familiar with Linux.
Familiarity with H.E.S.S. analysis codes and/or simulation code(s) such
as MOCCA, KASKADE etc. would be an advantage. Some travel to Namibia
would be expected.

For further details, please contact Paula Chadwick
(p.m.chadwick@durham.ac.uk) or John Osborne (j.l.osborne@durham.ac.uk).
