Dear collegue,

We would greatly appreciate if you could forward the attached message to
whom it may concern. Thank you very much for your help, with best regards

Graduate study positions in supernovae and star formation

ASTRONOMY

Stockholm Observatory

Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University

Two graduate study positions, funded by the Swedish Space Research
Council SNSB and Stockholm University, are open for application. The
funding period is 4 years, or 5 years if 20% of departmental duties
are included. The positions should be filled as soon as possible.

One of the successful candidates is expected to do his/her thesis work
in the area of observations and modeling of supernovae, while the
other will work in the field of formation of stars and planetary
systems. Both topics will be strongly related to existing and future
space based observations, accessible to the groups. Examples of such
instruments are HST, XMM, Odin, First, SIRTF, Darwin and
NGST. Complementary ground based observational work may be included. A
background in astronomy is a merit, but we also strongly encourage
students with a strong background in physics to apply.

The supernova group is active in observations of supernovae and
pulsars, using primarily HST and VLT, but also XMM and
Chandra. Observations are complemented with theoretical modeling of
the spectra of supernovae, their interaction with circumstellar media
and supernovae in the early universe. The main goal is an
understanding of the nucleosynthesis and the formation of compact
objects in the universe. The star formation group is oriented
primarily towards the infrared and submillimetre, using HST, ISO, ODIN
and the VLT. The group studies the various evolutionary stages of
stellar formation, from cold molecular cloud matter to planet forming
systems, with computational modeling being an essential element in the
research activities. For more information about the activities at the
department see www.astro.su.se.

The application (including curriculum vitae, extract of under-graduate
studies including grades, a copy of the under-graduate thesis,
possible recommendation letters, possible description of own research
and research interest, and other relevant material for our selection
process), should be marked Ref.No.617-0367/01 (supernovae) and
Ref.No.617-0368/01 (star formation), respectively. You are welcome to apply
to both positions. The deadline for application is Monday, March 5, 2001.
