ASTROPHYSICS WITH THE LARGE MILLIMETER TELESCOPE

The Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica Optica y Electronica (INAOE) is
seeking candidates for three research positions (tenure-track level) in
Astrophysics and several postdoc positions. Preference will be given
to candidates with experience in millimetre-wave Observational
Cosmology and/or millimeter-wavelength instrumentation and general
mm-wave observing experience, including molecular cloud observations.
However, candidates with expertize in other fields are also encouraged
to apply.

INAOE is currently engaged in a joint collaboration with the University
of Massachusetts to develop and build the Gran Telescopio Milimetrico -
Large Millimeter Telescope (GTM/LMT) and its suite of instrumentation.
The LMT is a single dish 50-meter telescope designed to perform at
millimeter and submillimeter frequencies up to 350 GHz. Astronomers at
INAOE will have significant access to the largest, most sensitive, most
technologically advanced millimeter-wave telescope ever built. The LMT
is currently under construction on Cerro La Negra, a high-altitude
(4600m) ultra-dry site in the central Mexican state of Puebla.

Following its completion, the GTM/LMT's un-paralleled collecting area,
resolution, and advanced panoramic millimeter-wave receivers and
cameras will enable scientific programs of fundamental importance to be
carried out. Drs Elena Terlevich, Itziar Aretxaga, Luis Carrasco, David
Hughes, Enrique Gaztanaga, Omar Lopez-Cruz and Guillermo Tenorio-Tagle
at INAOE are developing an Observational Cosmology research group to
study the earliest epochs of galaxy formation and evolution.

INAOE observational facilities include the 2.12 m telescope at Cananea
located at 2500m above sea level, 30 kilometers south of the border
with Arizona and within sight of Mount Hopkins and Kitt Peak. INAOE
staff also have access to the optical/IR telescopes at the Observatorio
Astronomico Nacional at San Pedro Martir (Baja California).

Candidates for the instrumentation jobs are expected to lead the
continued development of a microwave electronics laboratory in which
there has already been a substantial investment.

Additional information about INAOE, including present staff, the LMT
project, the Guillermo Haro advanced astrophysics program, the Cananea
observatory and our postgraduate program can be found in our web pages
http://www.inaoep.mx/~astrofi.

* The general conditions for tenure track positions are that the
applicants must have received their PhD prior to January 1997 and have
strong interest and experience in cosmology, galaxy formation and
evolution and/or millimeter wave instrumentation and observations.

* The main tasks are to undertake full-time research with a large
self-directed component, to participate in graduate training and
advising of graduate student, to perform some Institute-wide duties.
Such duties would be the planning and use of new LMT instrumentation
and the organization of scientific conferences and workshops.

* Tenure-track positions are for three years, based at INAOE in
Tonantzintla, 125 km east of Mexico City and 12 km west of the City of
Puebla. In accordance with internal rules at INAOE, candidates would be
evaluated at the end of the third year, at which time a tenured faculty
position can be considered.

* There is no formal deadline for applications. Decisions will be
taken to fill the posts on Jan 15, May 15 and Sept 15.

* Salaries are competitive by international standards. Please
contact Dr. Miguel Chavez (mchavez@inaoep.mx) for details.

Applicants must send their full curriculum vitae, list of
publications, and arrange for two reference letters to be sent to the
following address:
