Hello,

Due to an error 2 months in a row at the AAS job registry the HET
Resident Astronomer positions have not been advertised. I would
appreciate anything you might be able to do to pass this advertisement
on to qualified astronomers.
Thank you,

Matthew Shetrone

Research Engineering / Scientist Associate III
Two (2) Resident Astronomers /Observers
Hobby-Eberly Telescope
McDonald Observatory
Applications are invited for two (2) positions
as Research Engineering/Scientist Associate III
(internal title: Resident Astronomer/Observer,
Recruitment # 000821054209 and #000828074209)
at the Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET). The HET is
an innovative 9.2m optical telescope at the
McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains of
rural West Texas.
The principal responsibilities of the Resident
Astronomers/Observers at HET will be to conduct
low-, medium- and high-resolution spectroscopic
observations on behalf of Principal
Investigators; monitor and improve the
performance of scientific instruments; actively
assist with science instrument commissioning;
monitor the performance of operational systems;
assist the technical staff in the improvement
of telescope performance; and act as advocates
for scientific excellence. Time for research is
available and encouraged. Required
qualifications are a Masters degree in
astronomy or astrophysics and 4 years
experience in astronomical observing, or a
Doctoral degree in astronomy or astrophysics;
and an understanding of astronomical
spectroscopic instrumentation, observational
techniques and basic data reduction software
and techniques. Preferred qualifications
include substantial astronomical observing
experience including 8 - 10m class astronomical
telescopes, experience with a wide range of
astronomical imaging and spectroscopic
instrumentation, and a career commitment to
astronomical service.
The Resident Astronomers/Observers report to
the HET Facility Manager. These are funded,
long-term McDonald Observatory positions and
require residence in on-site housing. These
positions will commence immediately upon
selection of the successful candidates. Salary
will be commensurate with experience. The HET
is operated by the McDonald Observatory on
behalf of the University of Texas at Austin,
the Pennsylvania State University, Stanford
University, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität
München, and Georg-August-Universität
Göttingen. The Resident Astronomers/Observers
will be employed by the University of Texas at
Austin, which offers an excellent benefits
package.
Applicants should submit a resume, a cover
letter relating his or her education and
experience to the needs of these positions, and
the names of three individuals familiar with
the applicant's credentials from whom letters
of reference can be requested, to the address
below.
