Subject: [Forum HRA] Possible Research Associate Position at HIA, Victoria,
      Canada

Hello all,

The Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (HIA) in Victoria, BC, Canada is
anticipating to hire a Research Associate to assist with the design and
development of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). This position will
emphasize science (extra-solar planet detection and/or detection of
faint structure around stars) and experience with astronomical
observations (preferably using adaptive optics and/or high-contrast
imaging techniques), but experience / interest in instrumentation will
be a strong asset. This likely will be a two year term position,
renewable.

GPI consists of an integral field spectrograph that is coupled with a
very high order adaptive optics (AO) system and a coronograph to detect
planets and faint structures around other stars on the Gemini 8-meter
Telescope. GPI is a collaborative project between Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory, HIA, NSF CfAO, University of California, JPL, AMNH
and Universit de Montral. GPI has successfully passed conceptual
design review and is now entering the preliminary design phase. HIA is
a major partner in the GPI project, in charge of delivering the
opto-mechanical bench, the high level software and is heavily involved
in all systems engineering aspects, especially including AO control.
HIA has a very strong track record in developing state-of-the-art
scientific instruments, and is also currently heavily involved in many
aspects of the design of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and its suite
of instruments.
Major responsibilities of this position will include: scientific
support of the HIA GPI team; performance simulation of GPI; carrying
out original scientific research and scientific observations related to
extra-solar planet detection and/or detection of faint structures
around stars; involvement in the GPI science Working Group; liaison
with the Canadian science community.

A formal job description will probably be posted at a later date,
however if you, or somebody you know, think they might be interested in
applying for this position, it would help greatly if you could contact
me informally at this time.

Sincerely,

Jean-Pierre Vran
Head of the HIA Adaptive Optics Group
HIA GPI co-PI
