[astro-jc] Announcement and Call for Registration, ENEAS PhD school, 5-10 Sep Réza Samadi

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR REGISTRATION

PhD Conference on Astrophysics of Variable Stars

                         DATE: September 5 - 10, 2005

PLACE: Janus Pannonius University of Pécs, Pécs, Hungary

MAIN CONCEPT:

The purpose of this PhD school is to bring together young PhD students in
astronomy and to offer them a training course centred on the question: `How does
one perform optimally during a professional conference?'. Five very broad modern
research topics in stellar astrophysics have been selected for the lectures
which will be taught by international experts. Students working in all areas of
stellar astrophysics are welcome to participate and to present their PhD work.
Our idea is to give the participants a chance to get experience in presenting
oral contributions and to bring them closer to well-known experts in a friendly
atmosphere. Moreover, we offer them the opportunity to meet other PhD students
in similar phases of their scientific career. This PhD conference is quite
different from a `classical' PhD school or a broad scientific conference. The
organizers believe that both the senior experts and the young PhD students will
profit in a specifically focussed way from our initiative. Students may
criticise and give feedback to the lecturers on their presentations, and vice
versa. The senior lecturers will benefit for future guidance of PhD students,
while the PhD students will have gained significant expertise for future active
participation in large conferences, both of which are essential in modern
scientific research.

This PhD conference is held in the framework of the International Year of
Physics 2005 and is the first one organised under the auspices of the European
Network of Excellence in AsteroSeismology (ENEAS, http://www.eneas.info), but it
has a much broader scope than just pulsating stars (see below).

ORAL AND POSTER CONTRIBUTIONS:

Besides one invited lecture and one open-question discussion on selected topics
in variable star research (presented by invited experts), we foresee a large
amount of time for 20-minute oral contributions to be presented by the PhD
students. The presentation of a contributed talk is obligatory for each
registered student, the presentation of a poster is optional. Each student is
encouraged to accompany his/her talk by 1 poster in A0 format, either to deepen
the content of the talk or to present a second independent scientific result.
The participants will receive detailed feedback from the experts and from each
other on their oral presentation, on their poster and on their draft proceedings
papers. The latter have to be submitted well in advance of the school, so that
the editors can read them, discuss them with the students during the school and
suggest improvements, both on scientific and editorial issues.

PLACE:

Pécs is located in Southern Hungary at the hills of Mecsek National Park and
has a very friendly sunny climate, especially early September. The town has
good travel connections to Budapest by intercity trains. Pécs itself is a
designated World Heritage Site of UNESCO. There are many historical sites from
different eras, especially the 4-towered cathedral, catacombs, early Christian
cemetery from 4th century and some Turkish buildings of the 16th century. There
are 500-600 m high hills in the surroundings, giving nice panoramic views and
making the town very attractive. The town is also known as a regional centre of
arts. It has the oldest and largest Hungarian University which was founded in
1367 by King Louis the Great. In the 15th century, the humanist bishop Janus
Pannonius, who wrote some of Europe's most celebrated Renaissance poetry in
Latin, was also based here. The conference location is in the Faculty of Natural
Sciences of the University. For further information, please, visit: www.pecs.hu
(the town itself) www.ttk.pte.hu (the university).

ACCOMMODATION:

The students will be hosted in Hotel Hunyor at the campus of the university,
which has been blocked completely for the PhD school. Double room occupation is
foreseen. You are requested to indicate your preferred roommate in the
registration form. The invited lecturers will be accommodated in pensions at
walking distance from the Hotel Hunyor and from the conference
hall. Participants should indicate their means of transport to Pécs and their
time of arrival on the registration form. Shuttle buses will be arranged to pick
up participants at the train station and bring you to the hotel at regular times
on Saturday 3 September and Sunday 4 September 2005.

PROCEEDINGS and ABSTRACT BOOK:

We plan to publish the proceedings as a volume of Astronomical Society of the
Pacific Conference Series and will include them in ADS. In order to guarantee
high-quality papers, and to educate the students in the writing of scientific
papers, we request the students to submit a first draft of their papers before 1
June 2005. All the papers will be screened before the school by the Editors,
Chris Sterken and Conny Aerts, who will pay specific attention to both the
scientific content and the style. Each participant will receive information on
the stylefiles to be used and strict editorial rules to follow in due course.

Each student will receive feedback on his/her papers during the meeting from the
editors, who will formulate suggestions for improvements to be included in the
final version, with submission deadline 1 November 2005. The proceedings will
contain the invited lectures and evening discussion texts, as well as the
revised versions of the contributed papers of the talks and posters of the
students. The number of pages for the contributed talks is 4, and for poster
papers is 2.

The students also have to submit a one-page abstract for their contributed talk
and for their poster, before 20 May 2005.

All registered participants will receive the stylefile for the abstract book and
for the proceedings as well as strict guidelines from the editors well in
advance of the deadlines.
