Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie

The Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg, Germany, is
seeking immediately a

Coordinating Scientist (07/04) for the International Max
Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the
University of Heidelberg.

This school is a joint initiative of the Max-Planck-Institut für
Astronomie (MPIA), Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik (MPIK), Institut
für Theoretische Astrophysik (ITA), Astronomisches Recheninstitut
(ARI) , Landessternwarte Heidelberg (LSW), and the University of
Heidelberg. The school will offer graduate training opportunities with
excellent instrumental, observational, and theoretical research
facilities in up-to-date research themes on astronomy and
astrophysics. The school is laid out for an initial period of six
years. It is designed for highly qualified Ph. D. doctoral candidates
not only from Germany but especially from abroad. The program is run
largely in English.

The Coordinator supports, facilitates, organizes and coordinates the
work of the two spokespersons of the IMPRS - Prof. Hans-Walter Rix for
the MPIA and MPIK, and Prof. Wolfgang Duschl for the ARI, ITA and LSW
- with the involved research institutes and the various committees
established for the smooth run of the school. This includes the
selection procedure of the candidates, organization of lecture series
and summer schools, invitation of guest lectures, presentation of the
IMPRS in the Internet, use of the Internet as central medium for
school support and advertisement.

He or she should have a Ph.D. in a field related to the IMPRS program.
The coordinator is responsible for the general management of the IMPRS
and the support of the young scientists. We therefore seek a reliable
and responsible person with good organizational and communication
skills. The candidate should be able to work efficiently and
independently in an interdisciplinary context with excellent skills in
group organization and with good verbal and written knowledge of the
English language. Good familiarity with electronic media is also
required.
We offer a position with diverse activities in an excellent research
environment. The financial conditions depend on the qualifications
with a maximum salary base of BAT IIa/Ib (including Social Security
benefits) according to German public regulations. The position is
foreseen for the duration of the IMPRS, with an initial appointment of
three years and likely extension for another three years. The Max
Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and encourages
disabled persons to apply. It also aims at increasing the number of
female staff members in fields where they are underrepresented, and
therefore encourages women to apply.

The successful applicant should, if possible, start the offered
position not later than Oct.1, 2004. In order to ensure full
consideration, a curriculum vitae, publication list, statement of
professional goals, and the name of three references should be
directed by August 27, 2004 to:

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Mundt (Tel. 06221-528-227), Max-Planck-Institut für
Astronomie (Ref. 07/04), Königstuhl 17, D-69117 Heidelberg, Germany

Later applications will be considered as long as the evaluation
process is going on.
