Subject: jobs in GRB astrophysics

Amsterdam, 18 February 2003

Dear Colleague,

A PhD student position and a postdoctoral position have become
available in my GRB group. I would be most grateful if you could
bring the advertisement below to the attention of potentially
suitable candidates.

Warm Regards,
Ralph Wijers

          POSITIONS IN GAMMA-RAY BURST ASTROPHYSICS
          -----------------------------------------
                    UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM
                    -----------------------

Two positions are available in the gamma-ray burst group at the
Astronomical Institute `Anton Pannekoek' of the University of
Amsterdam, both starting in the autumn of 2004:
1. A PhD position (duration 4 years); candidates for this position
must have a masters degree or equivalent education and research
experience. Preference will be given to a candidate with
primarily observational interests, and observational experience
    is desirable.
2. A postdoctoral position (duration up to 3 years); candidates for
this position must have a PhD by the time the appointment starts.
Preference will be given to a candidate with primarily theoretical
interests; a (brief) research plan must be submitted with the
    application.
Salaries for both positions will be according to University salary
scales, commensurate with age and experience of the candidates.

The GRB group in Amsterdam presently consists of one faculty member
(Wijers), two PhD students, and one postdoctoral fellow. Funds for
the appointment of two further PhD students and one postdoctoral
fellow in 2005-2006 have already been secured. A number of other
faculty collaborate with the group on a variety of topics. The
group's interests focus on the physics of GRB afterglows and the
sources and progenitors of GRBs, but also include cosmological
aspects of GRBs. Amsterdam is the lead node of the GRACE
collaboration for observations of GRBs, and also of an EU-funded
Research Training Network on observational and theoretical research
on GRBs. The Astronomical Institute in Amsterdam has 11 faculty,
about 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 20 PhD students. The two main
foci of its research are high-energy astrophysics and studies of
interstellar and circumstellar matter and star formation.

Candidates should send their CV, transcript (for PhD position),
research plan (for postdoc), and 2 or 3 reference letters to:
Astronomical Institute, Attention: gamma-ray burst positions,
University of Amsterdam, Kruislaan 403, NL-1098 SJ Amsterdam,
The Netherlands. Submission via email to secr-astro@science.uva.nl
will also be accepted, provided documents are in pdf or plain text.
Inquiries may addressed to rwijers@science.uva.nl. Evaluation of
the applications will start on 15 March 2004 and continue until
the positions have been filled.
