The Infrared Group of the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial
Physics in Garching (near
Munich), Germany invites applications for a postdoctoral research
associate in infrared/
submillimeter astronomy with a starting date in the fall of 2004.
The current research program of the MPE IR group centers on
near-infrared, far-infrared and
millimeter, high resolution imaging and spectroscopy of the Galactic
Center, starburst galaxies
and AGN. We study the physical properties and dynamics of high-z
galaxies, black hole
formation and evolution, and galaxy mergers. The astronomical research
is supported by a major
program of innovative infrared instrumentation development. In early
2004 we will be upgrading
our SPIFFI NIR field imaging spectrometer to be used together with
adaptive optics on the ESO
VLT (SINFONI project), as well as commissioning the VLT Laser Guide
Star facility, PARSEC.
The appointee will be able to actively participate in the programs for
the substantial number of
guaranteed nights for both instruments. In 2005 we will be
commissioning a large far-infrared
imaging spectrometer (FIFI-LS) on the SOFIA airborne observatory. We
are also developing the
PACS camera/spectrometer for the Herschel satellite, and
instrumentation for the Large
Binocular Telescope (LBT). In addition, we have regular access to the
facilities at IRAM and
ESO. The post comes with a generous travel allowance and the
opportunity to spend time at UC
Berkeley as part of an international exchange program in astrophysics
between the Max-Planck
Society and Berkeley.
Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or related field before
starting. Preference will be
given to applicants whose research interests overlap with those of MPE
scientists or those with
backgrounds in IR/submm instrumentation. For further information see
http://www.mpe.mpg.de/www_ir/ir_home.php. To apply, please send a
letter of application
noting the "IR/submm-postdoc" position, a brief description of research
interests, a curriculum
vitae including bibliography, and three letters of reference before
December 15, 2003 to the
above address.
The MPE encourages applications from women, minorities and disabled
persons.
