SUPPORT SCIENTIST POSITION AT THE NORDIC OPTICAL TELESCOPE
       ==========================================================

A two-year position as Support Scientist is available at the Nordic Optical
Telescope (NOT; see http://www.not.iac.es) on La Palma in the Canary Islands,
Spain, beginning mid- or late 2003. The successful applicant will collaborate
with other staff in completing and commissioning the fiber-fed high-resolution
echelle spectrograph FIES, which will be installed at NOT during this period
(see http://astro.phys.au.dk/~srf/FIES for further information).

          The application deadline is *** JUNE 18, 2003 ***

NOT is a modern 2.5-m telescope operated jointly on La Palma by research
agencies in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and
Sweden). The staff operating the telescope on La Palma consists of ~15
astronomers, engineers, technicians, and graduate students. The FIES project
is carried out in collaboration with Dr. S. Frandsen, Aarhus University,
Denmark.

The specific task of the Support Scientist will be to implement software for
the reduction of scientific and calibration data for FIES. When the instrument
enters operation, (s)he will also take part in the scientific test and
calibration observations and carry out the corresponding data reductions to
determine and document the performance of the instrument. Providing Users' and
Technical Manuals for the data reduction system will be part of the task. The
Support Scientist may occasionally be asked to assist visiting astronomers
observing also with other NOT instruments. About 1/3 of the working time will
be available for personal astronomical research.

Candidates should, as a minimum, have an M.Sc. or equivalent degree in
astronomy and practical experience with data reduction in modern optical
spectroscopy, preferably high-resolution two-dimensional echelle data.
Familiarity with standard astronomical data reduction packages in a UNIX
environment (IRAF, MIDAS, IDL, etc.) and good reading and writing skills in
English are required. Experience in practical spectroscopic observations
and/or instrumentation or with pipeline data reduction systems would be an
asset, as would a Ph.D. degree in a relevant subject.

The position will open from approx. September 1, 2003, for a period of two
years. Salary plus allowances will be in the range 25,000-35,000 Euro (net)
per year, but will be decided individually depending on qualifications and
family status; for an exceptionally qualified candidate a higher level may
be negotiated. Health insurance and reasonable relocation costs for the
candidate and his/her family will also be covered by NOT.

Applications should contain a brief CV and documentation of the applicant's
experience in the fields mentioned above, an outline of the research projects
planned for the period, and references to up to five representative papers,
and should reach the NOT Director at the address below by the above date.

Further information on the position can be obtained from the NOT Director, Dr.
J. Andersen (ja@not.iac.es), the Astronomer-in-Charge, Dr. T. Augusteijn
(tau@not.iac.es), or the Project Scientist, Dr. J.H. Telting (jht@not.iac.es).
Information on the FIES instrument can also be obtained from Dr. S. Frandsen
(srf@phys.au.dk).
