GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Job Market at JENAM

This year, for the first time, a Job Market for young astronomers will
be held at the Joint European and National Astronomical Meeting (JENAM) in
Budapest on 25-30 August 2003.

A wide range of job opportunities will be on display, and informal
interviews between job seekers and potential employers will be possible
during the meeting. In addition, an open session will be held in which
employers will be able to present their employment programmes to the
astronomical community.

Young astronomers - students and post-docs - are therefore especially
encouraged to attend this JENAM, in order to take advantage of this
special opportunity to explore the wide range of career possibilities
open to them.

More information about this Job Market will be posted on the JENAM web
site (http://www.konkoly.hu/jenam03/) and the on web site of the
European Astronomical Society (http://www2.iap.fr/eas/index.html).

Please forward this announcement to any others who may be interested.

We look forward to seeing you at the JENAM!

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR EMPLOYERS

Job Market at JENAM

This year's Joint European and National Astronomical Meeting (JENAM)
will take place in Budapest on 25-30 August. It is the annual general
meeting for European astronomers, co-organized by the European
Astronomical Society and the astronomical society of the host country,
and is typically attended by over five hundred participants from all
over Europe. The title of this year's JENAM is "New Deal in European
Astronomy: Trends and Perspectives"; details can be found at
http://www.konkoly.hu/jenam03/

This year, for the first time, we are organizing a Job Market for young
astronomers at the JENAM. Job opportunities will be displayed
prominantly, and offices will be provided in which informal interviews
between job seekers and potential employers can take place. In addition,
an open session will be held in which employers can present their
employment programmes to the astronomical community.

We hope that you will send one or more representatives to present your
organization and its employment possibilities to the young astronomers
of Europe. Both the display of job opportunities and the provision for
interviews will be available throughout the entire meeting, and the open
session will take place on Thursday 28 August.

The standard advertisements for employment opportunities will be A4
size, and can simply be posted when you arrive at the meeting. If you
are interested in the possibility of interviews (and particularly if you
would like to make a presentation at the open session), please send an
e-mail to Peter Shaver (pshaver@eso.org) before June 1, so that
appropriate arrangements can be made.

We very much hope that you will participate in this important
initiative, and look forward to seeing you at JENAM 2003!

2. EAS grants for participation in the JENAM 2003

As done in previous years, the EAS is offering a limited amount of
travel grants to young scientists wishing to present their work in one
of the mini-symposia organised at the JENAM 2003 in Budapest. You will
find the application form, and full instructions, in the EAS web page at:
http://www.iap.fr/eas/meetings.html

Please note that the deadline for applications is MAY 15th.

3. A symposium to celebrate 6 years of successfull BeppoSAX operations

                    "The Restless High-Energy Universe"
Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, May 5-8, 2003

Internet: www.sron.nl/saxsymp
Email: saxsymp@sron.nl

This symposium on X-ray astronomy is dedicated
to six years of successful BeppoSAX observations (April 30, 1996 - April
30,2002) and is organized under the auspices of The Royal Netherlands
Academy of Arts and Sciences, Amsterdam, and The Academia Nazionale dei
Lincei, Rome.
The symposium is devoted to new results by XMM-Newton,
Chandra,RXTE, HETE, INTEGRAL and other spacecraft, in the fields in which
BeppoSAX was particularly active:
gamma ray bursts and their afterglows,
compact stellar and galactic objects (neutron stars and black holes), and
non-thermal phenomena in thin plasma sources like galaxy clusters,
supernova remnants and relativistic wind nebulae.

4. A "Near-Earth Astronomy" conference in Terskol, Russia

                "Near-Earth Astronomy 2003 (NEA-2003)
September 9-14, 2003 in Terskol, Russia (Elbrus region)

The international conference is being organized by the Institute of
Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INASAN) and by the
International Center for Astronomical, Medical and Ecological Research
(ICAMER).

Topics include: origin, migration and classification of small bodies;
nearby passes and impacts on Earth; geosychronous satellites; numerical
methods, instruments and observing techniques; Earth atmosphere
monitoring.

During the conference will be held also the mini-workshop on "Exploration
