Attention: Prof. G.K. Miley

Leiden Observatory invites applications for a tenure-track faculty
position starting mid-2003 in the area of (sub)millimeter astronomy,
with emphasis on interferometry. The successful applicant should have
extensive expertise in the use of (sub)millimeter interferometric
techniques, and develop a strong and independent research program
using existing and future (sub)millimeter facilities. He/she is
expected to play an active role in the preparation of the Dutch
community for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array.

Leiden Observatory carries out observational, interpretative and
theoretical research in the fields of star- and planet formation,
molecular astrophysics, astrobiology, late-type stars, galactic
structure, the formation and dynamics of (high-redshift) galaxies and
their nuclei, and cosmology. Staff members have access to a wide
variety of ground-based telescopes, including the ESO VLT/VLTI and
APEX, JCMT, Westerbork and the Isaac Newton Group of optical
telescopes on La Palma, as well as satellites of the European Space
Agency including the Herschel Space Observatory. Leiden Observatory is
part of Netherlands (top-)Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), a
national association of university astronomy departments, which is
actively involved in designing and building submillimeter receivers.
Leiden is a charming university town, within easy reach of the major
European centers.

The position is open to scientists of all nationalities. Applicants
should send a curriculum vitae, publication list, and a statement of
past and future research interests, and arrange for three letters of
recommendation to be sent to Professor G.K. Miley. Review of
applications will start January 15, 2003 and will continue until the
position is filled.
