 Positions available for space-related
 projects (Planck, Herschel)

 The Astrophysical Technologies Group (ATG) of the Astronomical Observatory
of Trieste (OAT) is seeking to
 fill 2 positions to support its space-related projects, carried out within
the framework of the Horizon 2000+
 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA). In particular, the OAT:
 1. coordinates the development and is in charge of operations for the Data
Processing Centre (DPC) for the
 LFI (Low Frequency Instrument) of the ESA Planck mission;
 2. contributes to the Instrument Control Centre (ICC) for the SPIRE
instrument of the ESA Herschel
 mission (formerly FIRST).
 Both missions are approved and in the implementation phase, and are due to
be (jointly) launched in February
 2007.

 The positions are initially defined to be "Research Contracts" (Assegni di
Ricerca) - the duration of the
 contracts is two years (renewable for additional two years) - remuneration
is 30,000,000 Lit annual (gross).
 After this period of four years, different contracts with the OAT will be
initiated, with responsibilities and
 remuneration proportional to know-how, and with duration until the end of
the respective projects (current
 estimation: end 2010).
 The 2 successful candidates will be respectively responsible for
developing, within an Object-Oriented (OO)
 environment, software related to:
 1. the data management and data pipeline tools for the Planck/LFI DPC;
 2. software components for the Common Science System of Herschel/SPIRE.
 Candidates should fulfill the following characteristics:
 * university degree in computer science, engineering, physics or
astronomy;
 * proven experience in application software programming (Java, C and/or
C++);
 * knowledge of databases (relational and/or OO) at the applications
developer's level;
 * knowledge of Unix and/or Windows/NT at the user level;
 * ability in working within a team;
 * good knowledge of English.
 A PhD degree, familiarity with astronomical observations and data
processing in the infrared and submillimeter
 fields, knowledge of UML techniques and knowledge of the Italian language
will be considered as assets.
 Location of the work: OAT, Trieste, Italy. For item 2 (Herschel/SPIRE)
periods of time of increasing duration
 will be spent in England (RAL, Chilton).

 Starting date: as soon as possible.

 Interested individuals are encouraged to contact dr. Fabio Pasian
(pasian@ts.astro.it , +39 040 3199221) and/or
 to submit a detailed CV
 * either by e-mail: pasian@ts.astro.it
 * or by fax: +39 040 309418 (attn. dr. F.Pasian)
 as soon as possible, and in any case within 24th April 2001.
 A formal call for the "Research Contracts" (Assegni di Ricerca) will
follow shortly.
