UCO/LICK OBSERVATORY/CfAO

Postgraduate Researchers

The University of Califomia Observatories/Lick Observatory and the Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) invite
applications for one or two postgraduate researcher positions, contingent on funding. Appointees will be
members of the DEEP team and/or the Santa Cruz team of the new NSF Science and Technology Center for
Adaptive Optics. The DEEP and CfAO programs are aimed at studying the formation and evolution of faint
galaxies. Data include the 120-night DEEP survey of 50,000 faint galaxies with Keck, plus subsurveys with
adaptive optics and Hubble Space Telescope. Appointees will lead one or more subprograms in collaboration
with Drs. Sandra Faber, Raja Guhathakurta, and David Koo, senior members of both DEEP and CfAO.
Opportunity and funds will be provided for independent research. Preference will be given to candidates with
demonstrated experience with observations of faint galaxies and/or adaptive optics.

RANK: Postgraduate Researcher Step IV to Step VIII

SALARY: $35,124-$41,736


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or equivalent in Astronomy or Physics or a closely related field,
relevant refereed publications, and experience with galaxy data reductions and analysis and/or adaptive optics.
Must be able to work independently yet collegially in a team environment.

TERM 0F APPOINTMENT: Two years, with possible extension to three, contingent on availability of
funding.
