Attention: Mrs. Cinzia Fumagalli, Office of the Director
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in Cosmology to
work in the VLT-VIRMOS Deep Survey at the Osservatorio Astronomico di
Brera (OAB), starting in the fall 2001. The fellowship is funded by
the Italian Ministry of Research and the OAB as part of a national
grant to support the project. The VIRMOS Survey will be conducted
during 120 VLT nights by the VIRMOS Consortium
(http://serweb.astrsp-mrs.fr/virmos/), a collaboration of six
French and Italian institutes which are building two milestone
spectrographs for the ESO Very Large Telescopes: VIMOS and NIRMOS.
The first, operating in the visible, will be operative in early 2001.
The successful applicant will be therefore fully involved in the
survey beginning phases, to which he/she is expected to provide
vigorous contribution in terms of observations, data analysis and
interpretation. Exchange and collaboration with scientists from the
other
poles in the Consortium will be an essential component of the work.
The fellowship is initially for two years, with progress review after
the first year. Further extension might be possible, pending re-funding
of the grant and successfull activity. The applicants should have
research interests and experience in the field of galaxy surveys,
galaxy and large-scale structure formation and evolution. Experience
with data analysis and the handling of large data sets will be an
asset. He/She will be based in Merate, near Milan. The gross salary
will be commensurate to experience, within the approximate range EU
22,000 to EU 25,000. The grant includes an appropriate travel and
computing budget.
The fellow will benefit of the stimulating environment of the OAB,
which houses one of the most active cosmology groups in Italy,
directly involved in other large survey projects, as e.g. the REFLEX
cluster survey and the BMW project. In addition to the gOleM optical
instrumentation group which is directly contributing to the building of
VIMOS/NIRMOS and other VLT instrumentation, OAB hosts a world-renowned
X-ray technology group involved in several space projects, as e.g. the
NASA-SWIFT satellite. Further details may be obtained from the www page
(http://www.merate.mi.astro.it), and related links.
Interested individuals should send a Curriculum Vitae, list of
publications and a statement of research interests. Application by
e-mail are encouraged. They should also arrange to have three letters
of reference sent directly to the same electronic address (or by
regular mail if preferred).
Applications received before 15 January 2001 will be given full
consideration. Please quote reference "OAB-VIRMOS Fellowship"
on mail correspondence. Informal enquiries on the job may be made to
Dr. L. Guzzo (tel. 039-999-1121 or 111, email:
