ASSOCIATE ASTROPHYSICIST POSITION AT THE INSTITUTO DE ASTROFISICA DE
CANARIAS (IAC)

The IAC (Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for an Associate
Astrophysicist position. The candidate will provide support to the
OSIRIS Principal Investigator in the development and operation of the
instrument and in the performance of the OSIRIS Scientific Program.

OSIRIS is an instrument for imaging and low resolution spectroscopy from
365 to 1000
nm, for the Spanish 10.4m telescope Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC),
currently under
construction at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma
(Spain), part
of the European Northern Observatory (ENO). OSIRIS will start its
scientific operation by the end of 2003.

The OSIRIS Scientific Programme covers different astrophysical areas and
involves
science to be done with, apart from OSIRIS, other existing and planned
facilities such as
FIRST (Far Infra-Red and Submillimetre Telescope). The selected
candidate will be
expected to devote her/his astrophysical research to the instrument's
scientific program.

Applicants should have a PhD in astrophysics or its equivalent and
research experience in
extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology. Experience in astronomical
instrumentation, its
commissioning and operation, data reduction pipelines, as well as
excellent
communication skills and good command of the English language, are
essential.

The contract will start not later than January 2001, with a minimum
duration of five years
subject to a yearly review. The minimum gross annual salary is 4.8
million pesetas,
depending on the experience and qualifications of the candidate. This
amount is subject to about 25% tax.

Medical insurance under the Spanish Health Service is provided and
includes cover for
accompanying spouse and children (also applicable to cohabiting
partners).

The selected candidate will be based at the IAC's headquarters in La
Laguna. However,
according to the project needs, the candidate should be prepared to
travel to the different partner institutions involved in OSIRIS, in
mainland Spain or abroad. Also, during the
commissioning phase of the instrument, the candidate will spend long
periods in the
Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos (La Palma).

Candidates should send three copies of their CV (including list of
publications), a
description of their scientific interests, and two letters of
recommendation from active
researchers who are familiar with the candidates’ previous experience,
to the Research
Division Secretariat, att. Tanja Karthaus, Instituto de Astrofísica de
Canarias, C/ Vía
Láctea s/n, E-38205 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, before December 30.
(Phone +34 922 605261; Fax: +34 922 605210; e-mail: secinv@ll.iac.es).

Applications must be received before 30 December 2000.
