Bcc : advertise

Dear Colleague,

Dept of Physics and Astronomy at University of Victoria is advertising
a junior faculty position in the area of Particle-Astrophysics (or
theoretical particle physics).

In addition, the newly established Canadian Computational Cosmology
Collaboration (C4) -- whose nodes are at University of Victoria and
McMaster University -- is offering two (and possibly three) postdocs
in Computational Cosmology. I am attaching the relevant notices
below and would be most appreciative if you would bring these two
advertisements to the attention of interested individuals in your
department .

Thank you.

TENURE TRACK POSITION IN PARTICLE ASTROPHYSICS / THEORETICAL PARTICLE PHYSICS
Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of Victoria

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor in the area of theoretical particle physics or theoretical
particle astrophysics. Applicants are expected to possess an exceptionally
strong and internationally recognized research record and outstanding
promise for future research accomplishments. The successful candidate will
have a commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy consists of approximately 17
faculty members working primarily in the research areas of particle
physics, astronomy/astrophysics and ocean physics. The particle physics
group has an ongoing participation in the OPAL and ATLAS experiments at
CERN and the BaBar experiment at SLAC. The members of the astronomy
group are internationally recognized for their research (both observational
and theoretical) in the areas of formation and evolution of galaxies and the
large-scale structure in the Universe, graviational lensing, stellar
populations, stellar evolution, binary and variable stars, the search
for extra-solar planets, as well as studies of comets and asteroids.
Victoria is the primary node of the newly establish Canadian
Computational Cosmology Collaboration.

The department has a very successful and productive association with
the near-by TRIUMF laboratory and with the Herzberg Institute for
Astrophysics, and its staff, telescopes and instrumentation.
Faculty members have access to astronomical facilities such as the
Canada-France-Hawaii, the James Clerk Maxwell and the Gemini telescopes,
as well to computational facilities consisting of Beowulf clusters and
a 128-node IBM SP supercomputer. See http://www.phys.uvic.ca for further
information.

The University of Victoria is an equity employer and encourages
applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities,
and aboriginal persons. In accordance with Canadian immigration
requirements, this advertisement is directed, in the first instance,
to Canadian Citizens and permanent residents; however, we encourage
ALL qualified applicants to apply.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, publication list, statement of
present and future research interests, and the names and addresses of at
least three referees, should be sent to:

Charles Picciotto, Chair
 Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of Victoria
P.O. Box 3055 Stn Csc
Victoria, BC V8W 3P6
Canada

Applications will be accepted until 31 December 2000, with an intended
starting date of 1July 2001.

 POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN COMPUTATIONAL COSMOLOGY
 see http://www.aas.org/JobRegister/no11496.html

The Canadian Computational Cosmology Collaboration (C4) is a newly
established collaborative venture that brings together theoretical
cosmologists at the University of Victoria (Arif Babul and Julio
Navarro) and at McMaster University (Hugh Couchman), dedicated to
studying the formation and evolution of galaxy systems in hierarchical
cosmologies. The Collaboration will carry out its mandate in close
partnership with computational cosmology groups at the University of
Durham (Carlos Frenk), the University of Washington (George Lake and
Tom Quinn) and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (Simon
 White).

The Collaboration expects to offer two (and possibly, three)
postdoctoral fellowships of up to three years in duration. It is
anticipated that postdoctoral fellows will be based both at the
University of Victoria and at McMaster University, with an expected
starting date of September, 2001 although earlier starting dates are
possible. Successful candidates will join C4 members, as well as CITA
National Fellows Joachim Stadel (Victoria) and James Wadsley
(McMaster), in collaborative and independent research efforts in
fields consistent with the Collaboration's mandate. Funds will be
available for travel and other research expenses. Strong interaction
between the groups at the two host universities is envisioned: this
will include travel between the institutions and attendance at annual
 C4 meetings.

C4 has guaranteed access to the 128-node IBM SP3 supercomputer in
Victoria, and to to Beowulf clusters in Victoria and McMaster, as well
as providing access to leading parallel simulation software. Access to
supercomputing facilities in the U.S., U.K., and Germany is also
 possible.

 Interested applicants should

   * send their curriculum vitae, bibliography and an outline of past and
     proposed research, and

   * arrange to have three letters of recommendations sent

 to:

           Prof. Arif Babul
           Director, Canadian Computational Cosmology Collaboration
           Dept. of Physics and Astronomy
           University of Victoria
           Elliott Building, 3800 Finnerty Road
           Victoria BC V8P 1A1
           CANADA

The deadline for receipt of applications and letters of recommendation
is December 31st, 2000. Applications received before December 1st will
also be considered for potential CITA National Fellowship
nominations. Please do NOT send documents by e-mail. Informal
enquiries may be directed to Arif Babul (babul@uvic.ca), Julio Navarro
 (jfn@uvic.ca) or Hugh Couchman (couchman@mcmaster.ca).

The University of Victoria and McMaster University are committed to
employment equity, and encourage applications from women, persons with
disabilities, visible minorities, and aboriginal persons.
